Spirit to Reach New Lows

The Middle Seat Terminal reported that Spirit Airlines, the same people whose customer service agents tried to charge a cancellation fee to a Flight 1549 survivor, wants to plaster ads on its flight attendants.

Ads have been found in many places on planes as airlines try to increase revenue. Skybus wrapped its planes in ads to make money. And Spirit put ads from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism on overhead bins, tray tables, and cabin walls, whereas most other airlines has limited themselves to the tray tables.

It is starting with a small ad on the aprons flight attendants wear while serving beverages….in this case, a Budweiser Light ad to start.

“Turning flight attendants into walking billboards is unacceptable,” said Deborah Crowley the president of the carrier’s FA union, in the press release. “The proposed aprons diminish the primary and federally mandated role of flight attendants as safety professionals and our role as first responders onboard.”

We can’t disagree. The union argues they undermine flight attendants’ federal obligation to cut off drunk or disorderly passengers, and are offensive to employees with religious objections to alcohol. We are, after all, supposed to take these people seriously. How do you take someone in a beer ad apron seriously? Or anyone trying to excessively sell you things for that matter?

The union also asked Spirit to pull a series of sexually suggestive ads. This is an airline, after all, that asks people to enjoy its DD(deep discounts) and MILF(many islands, low fares) specials . Here’s one they posted online…

Our recent post with historic airline ads made many comment that such tasteless things wouldn’t happen today. But Spirit has proved them wrong.
