Response to Spirit Luggage Fee

By | February 10, 2007

We commented last week on the Spirit Airlines plan to charge $10 for the second bag, $100 for each additional bag above that. The Coalition for Luggage Security had even more interesting things to say than we do.

The coalition is in favor of further separation of the cost of the ticket and the cost of luggage, and even separating the luggage from their flights to increase security by giving them the choice to have the airline or a private luggage carrier transport their luggage.

We can see the idea of encouraging reduction. But what happens next? Weighing passengers and charging them by the pound as well? Baggage allotments should be based on the volume of what one person should reasonably need for a two to four day trip. Anything more should be a luxury.
