AirTran Airways made a deal with Continental Airlines yesterday to stop flying to and from Newark Liberty Airport in exchange for slots at Washington National and New York’s LaGuardia Airports.

AirTran will cease operations at Newark on October 25th. AirTran will give its 10 slots, its single gate, and a jetway at Newark to Continental. In exchange, they will get four slots at LaGuardia and six at Washington National.

AirTran plans to add new service from LaGuardia to Indianapolis and increase service to Orlando. At National they will increase service to Atlanta and Orlando. That will give Airtran nineteen daily flights as of November 2009 to six cities nonstop from LaGuardia, and eleven flights daily to four cities from National.

Flights to Indianapolis as well as the other routes are already on sale for $69 each way.
