Southwest Inaugurates Service to Washington-Dulles Airport

By | October 5, 2006

In a press release, Southwest announced the inauguration of service from Dulles airport today with twelve daily nonstop departures: Seven daily flights to Chicago-Midway, once daily to Las Vegas, and twice daily to Orlando and Tampa Bay. The service complements Southwest’s hub at Thurgood Marshall International Airport in Baltimore(BWI), and provides an alternative to Northern Virginians who would otherwise have to brave the traffic to BWI in order to take advantage of Southwest’s fares and service.

Southwest’s DING! service, which is a software package that you can install to get special desktop-only fares, was offering special $25 each way fares as part of their promotion. This will likely not last. While Southwest is a low-fare carrier, and the patented Southwest effect causes overall prices in a market to go down after their arrival onto a route, they are not always the lowest at any given time.
