We’d talked about Northwest Florida – Panama City International Airport before. It is a new airport being constructed to replace the old Bay County Airport. When it opens on Memorial Day, the old airport will close.

Delta is currently the only carrier serving Panama City, offering regional service to Memphis and Atlanta. The new airport will have two jetbridges and a total of seven gates, with room for expansion.

It is shocking that the launch airline for the new airport is going to be Southwest Airlines. Places like Panama City, which might be called secondary markets, were once the bread and butter of the airline, but in recent years it has turned to much larger markets. The schedule for the service will be announced in December, but we’d imagine it will be from one of their hub cities.

But, in the land of Delta regional jets, the Southwest will be King. Good reason to fly there.
