Ithaca, NY: The Cradle of Aviation

By | May 12, 2009

Today in the Sky alerted us to the possibility that Continental would pull its service out of Ithaca-Tompkins Regional Airport in Ithaca, NY on June 11th. The airline offers several daily flights to its Newark Liberty hub. The most interesting part is flights after this point are still available for sale on the Continental website, so the cancellation is not official yet.

Ithaca has had a long history of air transportation. We happen to have a lot of material on the history of Commercial Aviation in Tompkins County, and will be posting some of it for your enjoyment. Over the years, the city has seen many airlines, and benefits from the presence of Cornell University, a major draw of the town with students and faculty from around the world.

Ithaca also boasts several tourist attractions, including the North American seat of the Dalai Lama. deep gorges, and waterfalls. For more information, visit Visitithaca.com.
