American Airlines Cancels Hundreds Of Flights

By | March 26, 2008

American Airlines cancelled 200 flights today, 10% of its flights, in order to allow for the inspection of its MD80 fleet for potential wiring issues. The planes constitute 300 of American’s 655 aircraft. The planes were previously inspected as per an FAA security directive, but a recent audit raised questions that led to this reinspection.

Other airlines using MD80/88 aircraft include Delta and Allegiant, but it is unclear at this time whether they will also require further inspection.

In a cancellation due to mechanical issues, unlike one caused by weather, the airline is fully responsible and should provide for meals, lodging and other necessities.

What has your experience as an affected passenger today been? What has American offered you as a result of your trouble? We’d love to hear.
