The Next Generation of 737s

By | September 8, 2006

Aero-News Network reports that the first 737NG with in-seat video was recently delivered to Jet Airways, an Indian carrier.

The latest 737-800 offers a Panasonic in-seat video system as an option, as standard outlets(not power ports) throughout the cabin. Boeing refers to it as the most technologically advanced single-aisle jet family on the market today. The 737 continues to be a popular aircraft.

What does this mean for North American carriers? Southwest Airlines, well known for its exclusive use of the 737, is unlikely to offer these features on its flights anytime soon, due to the issues that would come with having a small percentage of a fleet equipped with ife and power systems. They are, however, taking delivery of new aircraft to enhance their fleet. Westjet, which we recently spoke about, has a fleet including many 737NGs with In Flight Entertainment.

Either way, the increasing availability of these features for the 737ng means it could start to seriously compete with the A320, which has had in-flight entertainment options available for the last few years.
