U.S. Helicopter terminated its service on Friday between Manhattan heliports and JFK Airport. While they hope to resume it after new financing is secured, it may not be the best time for such a luxury product. Prices averaged up to $159 for an 8 minute ride to the airport, but the company allied with airlines to provide all inclusive fares for business class passengers, which is a much better option than ala carte, like many short-flights.

We wish them luck, if they can make it work. The idea always seemed sound. We’re not versed in the economics of helicopter operation, as it is a bit outside of our normal area, and are looking for someone to educate us on this. But they do make larger helicopters. Perhaps a large helicopter with more seats will allow them to spread their costs out a bit better.

We’ll be watching.
