Icelandair Celebrates 70th Anniversary

By | February 17, 2007

Icelandair is celebrating its 70th anniversary and is offering a hundred dollar discount off four packages to Iceland. Icelandair began in 1937 as a domestic carrier. In 1945, Icelandair initiated its first flights outside of Iceland to Scotland. By 1948, they served Scotland, Copenhagen, and Oslo.

On August 26, 1948, the airline made its first flight to Idlewild Airport in New York…now JFK.

Icelandair now operates from Boston, New York-JFK, Baltimore/Washington, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando Sanford and Halifax (opening May ’07). In addition to Reykjavik, Icelandair services destinations in Scandinavia (Copenhagen, Helsinki, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen); Great Britain (London, Manchester, Glasgow); and Continental Europe (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris) through the airline’s hub in Iceland. Some destinations are seasonal.
