Southwest to Resume San Francisco Service

By | February 9, 2007

Not to be outdone by Jetblue’s recent Bay Area Trifecta, Southwest has announced its intention to resume service to San Francisco International Airport. Southwest operated at SFO from 1982 to 2001. At the termination of service, Southwest offered 14 daily departures to San Diego and Phoenix.

Southwest credits its return to the airport to the Airport Commission making the airport a much more attractive venue for low-fare carriers. Of course, the arrival of Jetblue and Southwest seems to be another nail in the coffin of Virgin America…even if it does get off the ground. Southwest has also ceased its previous strategies of avoiding the larger airports and serving secondary ones and now considers all airports ‘fare’ game.

Southwest will release the details of its service in the coming months.
